Esta intervención marca un hito histórico para la aviación peruana, ya que convierte al terminal en el primer aeropuerto del país en operar con dos pistas de aterrizaje las 24 horas del día.

Este logro permite incrementar significativamente su capacidad operativa, reducir tiempos de espera tanto para aerolíneas como para pasajeros y mejorar la experiencia general del viaje, fortaleciendo a su vez la conectividad aérea nacional e internacional. De esta manera, el Aeropuerto Internacional Jorge Chávez queda preparado para atender a más de 25 millones de pasajeros al año y alrededor de 500 vuelos diarios —cifras que representan un aumento de casi el 40% respecto a su capacidad anterior—, lo que posiciona al Perú como un actor clave en la red de transporte aéreo de América del Sur.

El ministro Prieto destacó que la reapertura de esta pista culmina un proceso de rehabilitación integral que permite, por primera vez, consolidar la operación simultánea de dos pistas en el principal aeropuerto del país. “Esta obra también responde a una visión de largo plazo. Es una inversión estratégica en seguridad, confiabilidad y sostenibilidad diseñada para acompañar el crecimiento del transporte aéreo en los próximos años y para consolidar al Perú con un hub aéreo regional plenamente conectado”, señaló el funcionario. Este hub aéreo permitirá aumentar las rutas directas a mercados clave como Estados Unidos, Europa, Asia y otros países latinoamericanos, impulsando el turismo, el comercio exterior y la generación de empleos en el sector.

La intervención en la pista 1 incluyó el recapeo total de sus 3 500 metros de longitud y 45 metros de ancho, utilizando materiales resistentes a las condiciones climáticas del Callao y al tránsito de aeronaves de gran porte. Además, se llevó a cabo la renovación y construcción de nuevas calles de rodaje y señalización vial aérea, trabajos que optimizan la fluidez de las operaciones y reducen el riesgo de incidentes. Estas obras forman parte del contrato de concesión entre el Estado Peruano y Lima Airport Partners (LAP), empresa encargada de la administración y modernización del aeropuerto desde 2001, y se enmarcan en el plan de expansión que busca mantener a Jorge Chávez al día con los estándares globales.

NUEVO SISTEMA DE LUCES: TECNOLOGÍA DE ÚLTIMA GENERACIÓN PARA MAYOR SEGURIDAD

Asimismo, se inauguró el nuevo sistema de luces de la pista 1, ejecutado por la Corporación Peruana de Aeropuertos y Aviación Comercial (CORPAC) con una inversión estratégica de US$ 40 millones, en coordinación con LAP. Este moderno sistema incorpora más de 2 200 luminarias LED de última generación, que ofrecen mayor eficiencia energética (reducen el consumo eléctrico en un 60% respecto a los sistemas antiguos), menor costo operativo y mejor visibilidad para las aeronaves, especialmente en condiciones de baja luminosidad o mal tiempo (niebla, lluvia intensa).

Además, el sistema cuenta con tecnología redundante —es decir, con sistemas de respaldo paralelos—, lo que garantiza la continuidad de las operaciones aéreas ante eventuales fallas eléctricas. Esta característica cumple con los más altos estándares internacionales de seguridad aeronáutica establecidos por la Organización de Aviación Civil Internacional (OACI), lo que reduce el riesgo de cancelaciones o retrasos por problemas de iluminación.

El MTC reafirmó el compromiso del Gobierno de seguir impulsando una aviación segura, moderna y eficiente, mediante el trabajo articulado con sus entidades adscritas (como CORPAC) y el sector privado. Este tipo de inversiones no solo beneficia a pasajeros y aerolíneas, sino que también contribuye al desarrollo económico del país al mejorar la conectividad y atraer inversiones extranjeras.

Minister Prieto emphasized that the reopening of this runway culminates a comprehensive rehabilitation process that, for the first time, allows for the simultaneous operation of two runways at the country’s main airport. “This project also reflects a long-term vision. It is a strategic investment in safety, reliability, and sustainability designed to support the growth of air transport in the coming years and to solidify Peru’s position as a fully connected regional air hub,” the official stated. This air hub will allow for an increase in direct routes to key markets such as the United States, Europe, Asia, and other Latin American countries, boosting tourism, foreign trade, and job creation in the sector.

The work on Runway 1 included the complete resurfacing of its 3,500 meters in length and 45 meters in width, using materials resistant to Callao’s weather conditions and the traffic of large aircraft. In addition, new taxiways and air traffic control signage were renovated and constructed, improvements that optimize operational efficiency and reduce the risk of incidents. These works are part of the concession agreement between the Peruvian State and Lima Airport Partners (LAP), the company responsible for the airport’s administration and modernization since 2001, and are part of the expansion plan that aims to keep Jorge Chávez International Airport up-to-date with global standards.
