La ceremonia, en la que también participó el embajador del Perú en Estados Unidos, Alfredo Ferrero, destacó la entrada en vigor de este instrumento internacional, que marcó un hito histórico en la relación económica bilateral. A 15 años de vigencia del llamado Tratado de Libre Comercio (TLC), el comercio bilateral casi se ha triplicado, alcanzando los US$ 22 mil millones.

El embajador Ferrero resaltó que el TLC ha sido la plataforma para que el Perú negocie otros 21 acuerdos de libre comercio, contribuyendo al crecimiento económico y a la creación de empleo. También presentó la publicación “15 años del TLC Perú-EE. UU., fortaleciendo nuestra asociación económica”, que incluye estadísticas, testimonios e historias de éxito de empresas como Walmart, Driscoll’s y el Puerto de Filadelfia.

El documento también resalta que California, Florida y Pennsylvania son mercados clave para las frutas peruanas, y destaca que estados como Texas, Luisiana y Arizona importan cantidades significativas de cobre y petróleo peruanos. Además, indica que el TLC ha contribuido a la expansión de la gastronomía peruana en Estados Unidos, con más de 400 restaurantes peruanos que se benefician del acceso a productos provenientes de nuestro país y a precios competitivos

También el evento contó con un panel titulado “Explorando Logros y Oportunidades dentro del TLC Perú-Estados Unidos”, moderado por Neil Herrington, vicepresidente Senior de las Américas de la Cámara de Comercio de los Estados Unidos. Este es el gremio empresarial más grande del mundo, que representa a alrededor de 3 millones de compañías a nivel global.

Las ponencias estuvieron a cargo de Patrick Delaney, director de Asuntos del Gobierno Federal de Walmart; Dominic O’Brien, director senior de Marketing del Puerto de Filadelfia; y, María Luisa Boyce, vicepresidenta de Asuntos Públicos de UPS. Los panelistas destacaron que el TLC ha convertido al mercado estadounidense en el principal destino de las exportaciones peruanas con valor agregado, impulsando una revolución agroexportadora y generando miles de empleos. Por ejemplo, el sector agrícola ha crecido siete veces, de US$ 589 millones en 2009 a US$ 3,436 millones en 2023, posicionando a Perú como el segundo proveedor de frutas para Estados Unidos con productos como arándanos, uvas y paltas.

La ceremonia también contó con la presencia de congresistas estadounidenses, entre ellos miembros del grupo parlamentario enfocado en temas relacionados con Perú (Caucus Perú) como el congresista republicano Carlos Gimenez. El evento concluyó con una recepción en la que se ofreció lo mejor de la gastronomía peruana en la sede del Legislativo norteamericano.

Peru and the US celebrate in the US Congress the 15 years of the FTA Trade Promotion Agreement between Peru and the United States.

The panelists highlighted that the FTA has turned the US market into the main destination for Peruvian exports with added value, promoting an agro-export revolution and generating thousands of jobs. For example, the agricultural sector has grown seven times, from US$589 million in 2009 to US$3,436 million in 2023, positioning Peru as the second largest fruit supplier to the United States with products such as blueberries, grapes and avocados.

The ceremony was also attended by US congressmen, including members of the parliamentary group focused on issues related to Peru (Peru Caucus) such as Republican congressman Carlos Gimenez. The event concluded with a reception in which the best of Peruvian gastronomy was offered at the headquarters of the North American Legislature.
