Minutos antes de asumir la responsabilidad de la Presidencia de la República el 10 de octubre, me prometí que iba a gobernar sobre la base de mi forma de ser, y que el cargo no me iba a encapsular ni alejarme de la realidad. Producto de ello, se generó un nuevo estilo de gobierno, uno que priorice la presencia en las calles, en nuestras regiones y no en una oficina. Por ello, tienen un presidente que camina, que rompe protocolos, que se detiene a saludar y a escuchar.

Un presidente de acción, que trabaja como todos los peruanos: mañana, tarde, noche y madrugada, sin importar si es sábado, domingo o feriado. Un presidente que interactúa directamente desde sus redes sociales, que no se esquiva las críticas y que nunca evita responder a quien le pregunte o cuestione. Un presidente que sale a comer con lentes o sin lentes.

Un presidente que sale a comprar con gorra o sin gorra, y un presidente que asiste a misa las veces que puede. Es así que el 26 de diciembre, siendo feriado, en un horario de atención habitual y prudente, y luego de conversar y coordinar como todos los días – revisando Lima con el ministro Tiburcio y mi escolta – los invité a cenar en el chifa del señor Johnny, quien estaba en su local y a quien conozco de tiempo atrás por diversas actividades culturales y sociales.

Las veces que he ido a su chifa o a su tienda de productos, ya sea solo o con sus trabajadores, siempre me han atendido de manera cortés. Sin embargo, debo reconocer que en nuestro país han habido situaciones recientes con expresidentes que aún generan sensibilidad en la opinión pública y que han dado pie a que se vincule mi salida en la noche a comer con episodios pasados. Por ello, quiero ser sumamente enfático.

Mi salida a comer en el chifa – donde aprovechamos para conversar principalmente sobre la futura celebración de la Amistad Perú-China del 1 de febrero, cuyas reuniones posteriores además son de público conocimiento – no tuvo contenido irregular ni de similar naturaleza. Además, es preciso señalar que ni ese día ni en otro momento me ha solicitado algún tipo de pedido o apoyo, ni que interceda por él o por terceros. Asimismo, desconozco la totalidad de sus amistades o de sus actividades pasadas.

Eso sí: si él me hubiera pedido algo irregular, automáticamente hubiera cortado todo vínculo con él. Una de las cosas que aprendí en mi casa y que define mi personalidad es que hay que saber reconocer los errores y pedir disculpas. Por ello, a todo peruano que me está viendo en este momento, admito mi error y pido disculpas públicas por haber ingresado de la manera que lo hice, encapuchado, y que ello haya dado pie a generar suspicacias y dudas sobre mi comportamiento, además de haber propiciado la creación de historias irreales que no tienen ningún asidero.

Asimismo, y para tranquilidad de todos los que me ven, en las instancias en que se me pida información o se me cite para seguir explicando este asunto, colaboraré como siempre, dando la cara sin esconderme y transparentando además las actividades mencionadas al inicio. Sabiendo que todos los peruanos queremos votar con esperanza y optimismo, no me permitiré cometer nuevamente un error de este tipo, que debilite la confianza y las expectativas en el gobierno y en nuestro compromiso de dejar un país con resultados positivos y encaminado al futuro. Que esto no siga distrayendo la agenda principal y que el esclarecimiento de los hechos siga en las instancias que sean necesarias. Apelo a que tú y yo sepamos elegir por cinco años a nuestras próximas autoridades.

Por lo pronto, y hasta julio de este año, me seguirán viendo en las calles, escuchando e interactuando con la gente, en operativos con las fuerzas del orden o en instituciones públicas, de día o de madrugada, sea en Lima o en cualquier región, comprando en las tiendas o comiendo algo. Pero esta vez dejaré registro de mis actividades para que las cosas buenas que uno hace no parezcan malas.

President of the Republic clarifies his trip to a Chinese restaurant and reaffirms his commitment to the Peruvian people.

Minutes before suministra the Presidency of the Republic on October 10, I promised myself that I would govern based on my own character, and that the office would not isolate me or distance me from reality. As a result, a new style of government was created, one that prioritizes being present in the streets, in our regions, and not in an office. Therefore, you have a president who walks, who breaks protocol, who stops to greet and listen.

A president of action, who works like all Peruvians: morning, noon, night, and early morning, regardless of whether it is Saturday, Sunday, or a holiday. A president who interacts directly through his social media, who doesn’t shy away from criticism, and who never avoids answering anyone who asks or questions him. A president who goes out to eat with or without glasses.

A president who goes shopping with or without a hat, and a president who attends Mass as often as he can. So, on December 26th, a holiday, during normal and reasonable business hours, and after talking and coordinating as usual—reviewing the DIMA (National Administrative Department of Statistics) with Minister Tiburcio and my security detail—I invited them to dinner at Mr. Joni’s Chinese restaurant. He was at his establishment, and I’ve known him for some time through various cultural and social activities.

The times I’ve gone to his restaurant or his store, whether alone or with his employees, I’ve always been treated courteously. However, I must acknowledge that recent situations involving former presidents in our country still resonate with the public and have led to my evening dinner being linked to past events. Therefore, I want to be extremely clear.

My outing to eat at the Chinese restaurant—where we mainly discussed the upcoming Peru-China Friendship Day celebration on February 1st, the subsequent meetings of which are also public knowledge—did not involve any irregular or similar content. Furthermore, it’s important to note that neither that day nor at any other time has he asked me for anything, nor for support, nor to intercede on his behalf or on behalf of others. Likewise, I am completely unaware of his friendships or his past activities.

However, if he had asked me for anything inappropriate, I would have immediately severed all ties with him. One of the things I learned at home, and which defines my character, is the importance of recognizing mistakes and apologizing. Therefore, to every Peruvian watching this, I admit my error and publicly apologize for entering the premises the way I did, hooded, which may have given rise to suspicion and doubt about my behavior, as well as fueling the creation of baseless and unfounded stories.

Furthermore, and for the peace of mind of everyone watching, whenever I am asked for information or summoned to further explain this matter, I will cooperate as always, facing the public without hiding and making the activities mentioned at the beginning transparent. Knowing that all Peruvians want to vote with hope and optimism, I will not allow myself to repeat this type of mistake, which weakens trust and expectations in the government and in our commitment to leaving a country with positive results and on the right path to the future. Let this not continue to distract from the main agenda, and let the clarification of the facts continue in the necessary forums. I appeal to you and me to choose our next leaders wisely for the next five years.

For now, and until July of this year, you will continue to see me in the streets, listening to and interacting with people, in operations with law enforcement or in public institutions, day or night, whether in Lima or any other region, shopping in stores or having a bite to eat. But this time I’ll keep a record of my activities so that the good things one does don’t appear bad.
