Su familia y líderes lo recuerdan como un “médico amado”.

El Presidente Nelson fue llamado como Apóstol el 7 de abril de 1984 y se convirtió en el líder de la Iglesia el 14 de enero de 2018. Su liderazgo será recordado por su ministerio mundial, visitando 32 países y territorios de los Estados Unidos, el incremento en la construcción de templos (anunció 200 templos nuevos) y cambios significativos enfocados en ministrar como Jesucristo y recalcar la centralidad del Salvador.

Antes de su servicio a tiempo completo en la Iglesia, el Presidente Nelson fue un reconocido cardiocirujano, realizando la primera cirugía a corazón abierto en Utah en 1955. Fue presidente de la Sociedad de Cirugía Vascular, director de la Mesa Estadounidense de Cirugía Torácica, y presidente de la Asociación Médica del Estado de Utah.

President Nelson was called as an Apostle on April 7, 1984, and became the leader of the Church on January 14, 2018. His leadership will be remembered for his worldwide ministry, visiting 32 countries and U.S. territories, increasing temple construction (he announced 200 new temples), and significant changes focused on ministering like Jesus Christ and emphasizing the centrality of the Savior.

Before his full-time service in the Church, President Nelson was a renowned cardiac surgeon, performing the first open-heart surgery in Utah in 1955. He served as president of the Society for Vascular Surgery, director of the American Board of Thoracic Surgery, and president of the Utah State Medical Association.
