The CPTPP would enter into force after ratification by the Executive.

The Foreign Relations Commission, chaired by legislator Gilmer Trujillo, approved by majority the opinion referring to Peru’s participation in the CPTPP, which must be debated and approved by the Plenary of Congress, and then sent to the Executive Power for ratification. and enforcement.

“We trust that it can be debated and approved before the end of the legislature, and then proceed to its ratification by the Executive. Its entry into force will allow us to take advantage of a positive international scenario, where the main economies of the world are beginning to overcome a rather complicated 2020 ”, explained the president of the union, Erik Fischer Llanos.

The CPTPP is the trade agreement with the greatest significance as it encompasses 11 of the world’s most dynamic economies, from 3 continents: Australia, Brunei Darussalam, Canada, Chile, Malaysia, Mexico, Japan, New Zealand, Peru, Singapore and Vietnam. These represent 13% of world GDP and 15% of international trade, adding more than 500 million potential consumers.

In this sense, Fischer continued, if this treaty is ratified, Peruvian industry will be able to join important global value chains where, unfortunately, Latin American companies have not been able to develop as those from Southeast Asia have done; also, strategically position itself in the Asia Pacific region.

“It would be a significant step for a small economy like Peru’s, even more so at this juncture in which the objective is to exceed the highest historical amount (around US $ 47 billion in 2018) and bring the benefits of our activity to a more people. For this reason, it is necessary to execute strategies that promote foreign trade ”, he pointed out.

FOREIGN TRADE DRIVING GROWTH
The union leader highlighted the great relevance of the Free Trade Agreements (FTA), as they are beneficial. “The most developed nations are those that promoted trade, expanded destinations for their companies, contributed to improving their competitiveness, have raw materials and machinery at lower costs and encourage greater flows of foreign investment,” he added.

He affirmed that it is equally vital to shore up the competitiveness of the productive fabric with transversal and sectoral initiatives that allow Peruvian companies to be on par with their peers from other economies.

“Exports are one of the most important engines of growth, measures must be promoted to promote their recovery and that their benefits – more and better jobs, decentralization, formality and the fight against poverty – reach vulnerable populations in all corners of the world. Peru ”, he concluded.
