English translation
40% of children admitted to the Rebagliati hospital are obese and overweight, EsSalud reported.

Peruvian News Agency PRENSAPERU.PE https://prensaperu.pe Twitter: @prensaperupe Nutritional support is a therapeutic strategy for every seriously ill child. Under this premise, the Pediatric Nutrition Service of the Edgardo Rebagliati National Hospital prepares more than 300 daily rations for children recovering from different pathologies, even in critical condition. What makes each serving special is that it is designed in exact amounts of nutrients, according to the nutritional requirements of each child.

The hospitalization area of the hospital houses an average of 120 children, even counting those who have a temporary stay due to emergency. Each of them requires not only individualized medical or therapeutic management, but also a special diet.

Within the group of pediatric critically ill patients there are three main groups: those who require or have undergone organ transplantation (16), those with hematological problems (16) and cancer patients (18). To them, the team of nutritionists performs a nutritional anamnesis, a report that records the nutritional history of the child, and daily monitoring, in order to modulate the dietary treatment, its biochemistry and the anthropometric evaluation.

Lic. Milagros Escobedo, a nutritionist in the clinical area of the pediatric unit, stressed that, to ensure full recovery, the patient is also cared for in the post-intervention stage. “In the case of transplants, we want to ensure that the graft enters as a perfect binomial in the overall functioning of the child’s body; in cancer cases, we seek to strengthen the immune system both in the treatment and in the underlying disease ”, he pointed out.

But there is a parallel pandemic that is affecting the health of our children, we are talking about overweight and obesity. This occurs when a person’s weight is above what is considered healthy, as a result of excessive intake of some foods and a sedentary lifestyle.

Obesity can cause complications like heart problems, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol. Of the total of 120 hospitalized children, 25% are overweight and 18% obese, this makes about 40% of children with nutritional risk.

During hospitalization, a child receives food in three shifts: breakfast, lunch and dinner, as well as two snacks during the day. In the case of lactating babies, they receive breastfeeding or special milk formula every three or four hours, depending on their age, in addition to complementary feeding.

The Nutrition Service provides different preparations in textures and flavors, completing the macronutrient requirement without damaging the food habits of the area of the country where it comes from. This service prepares more than 300 daily servings of food.

SPECIAL FOODS ACCORDING TO EACH PATHOLOGY
In the case of transplant patients, amino acid formulas predominate, so that they can more easily regenerate the cells of medium chain triglycerides and lactose-free high-absorption carbohydrates so that the patient avoids problems of distention, reflux or vomiting and can absorb most of the nutrients.

On the side of oncohematological patients, hyperprotein and hypercaloric diets are offered because chemotherapy treatments tend to weaken the immune system of children. The objective is that they have a better adherence to treatment and can be discharged soon. The diets are based on carbohydrates such as cereals and tubers, proteins such as meat, chicken or fish and once or twice a week, beef and in addition to fruits and vegetables

The preparations are of low microbial load to avoid complicating the health of the child. Gastric monitoring of children is daily in order to provide them with adequate, sufficient and pleasant food that can be fully consumed.
