Agencia Peruana de Noticias PRENSAPERU.PE https://prensaperu.pe Twitter: @prensaperupe Durante su participación en la Cumbre por la Democracia, organizada por el gobierno de los Estados Unidos, el presidente de la República, Pedro Castillo Terrones, afirmó hoy que es necesario pasar de una democracia electoral a una democracia efectiva que garantice los derechos a la salud, a la educación, al agua potable, a la igualdad de oportunidades, a la vivienda, al empleo y al trato digno.

Sostuvo que ello implica combatir con mayor determinación la pobreza, la desigualdad y la exclusión, y profundizar la solidaridad internacional para hacer realidad un nuevo contrato social global, como lo ha propuesto el secretario General de las Naciones Unidas, Antonio Guterres, en concordancia con la Agenda 2030.

El mandatario agregó que los desafíos de la democracia también pasan por garantizar el Estado de derecho, el equilibrio de poderes, la independencia de los sistemas de administración de justicia y las libertades de prensa y expresión.

Anunció que nuestro país seguirá impulsando la lucha contra la corrupción, tanto en el ámbito global como hemisférico, para tener una respuesta conjunta que evite la impunidad, el lavado de activos y otras actividades dolosas.

“Tenemos la convicción de que la mayor defensa de la democracia es una ciudadanía cuyas demandas sean atendidas por un Estado honesto, eficiente y transparente”, manifestó durante su intervención.

En otro momento, señaló que el Perú continuará abogando en los foros internacionales para que todos los países tengan acceso equitativo a diagnósticos, terapias, medicamentos y vacunas, así como a los componentes que se requieren en la respuesta frente a la COVID-19, porque es necesario avanzar hacia un sistema de salud más sólido y más inclusivo.

“La pandemia no ha creado un problema nuevo, sino que ha acelerado muchos de los que ya existen. El mayor reto que tenemos es salir de esta crisis y construir una sociedad más justa, más equitativa, más desarrollada y más democrática”, subrayó el Jefe de Estado.

La Cumbre por la Democracia se desarrolla de manera virtual entre el 9 y 10 de diciembre, y es convocada por el presidente de los Estados Unidos de América, Joseph R. Biden Jr.

Más de 110 presidentes y líderes participan en los diálogos con el objetivo de reflexionar sobre la situación de la democracia en el mundo e identificar acciones que contribuyan a su fortalecimiento y estabilidad institucional.

El debate está centrado en torno a tres temas principales: fortalecimiento de la democracia; respeto de los derechos humanos; y lucha contra la corrupción.

“We are convinced that the greatest defense of democracy is a citizenry whose demands are met by an honest, efficient and transparent State,” he said during his speech.

At another time, he pointed out that Peru will continue to advocate in international forums so that all countries have equitable access to diagnostics, therapies, drugs and vaccines, as well as the components that are required in the response to COVID-19, because it is necessary to move towards a stronger and more inclusive health system.

“The pandemic has not created a new problem, but has accelerated many of those that already exist. The biggest challenge we have is to get out of this crisis and build a fairer, more equitable, more developed and more democratic society ”, stressed the Head of State.

The Summit for Democracy takes place virtually between December 9 and 10, and is convened by the President of the United States of America, Joseph R. Biden Jr.

More than 110 presidents and leaders participate in the dialogues with the aim of reflecting on the situation of democracy in the world and identifying actions that contribute to its institutional strengthening and stability.

The debate is centered around three main themes: strengthening democracy; respect for human rights; and fight against corruption.
