El 80º período de sesiones de la Asamblea General, bajo el lema «Juntos y juntas logramos más: más de 80 años dedicados a la paz, el desarrollo y los derechos humanos», se presenta en un instante decisivo para renovar el compromiso mundial con el multilateralismo, la solidaridad y la acción conjunta en favor de las personas y el planeta. La semana de alto nivel de este año resalta la necesidad apremiante de hacer realidad la promesa de los Objetivos de Desarrollo Sostenible y revitalizar la cooperación mundial.
Dos plataformas esenciales exhibirán acciones y soluciones: la icónica Zona de Medios de los ODS, del Departamento de Comunicación Global de la ONU, con entrevistas dinámicas y mesas redondas sobre soluciones para los ODS, que se realizará del 22 al 26 de septiembre; y la Sala de los Objetivos, convocada por el Vicesecretario General de la ONU y organizada por la Oficina de las Naciones Unidas para las Alianzas (UNOA), del 20 al 26 de septiembre, que brindará diálogos espontáneos, análisis exhaustivos de temas cruciales y experiencias interactivas.

A través de relatos de transformación de comunidades, países y regiones que impulsan el cambio en diversos sectores, como las energías renovables y la igualdad de género, este evento de tres horas de duración demostrará que las transiciones justas e inclusivas impulsan el progreso, incluso frente a los desafíos globales.

La Conferencia ratificará los compromisos internacionales con la solución biestatal e intentará movilizar el respaldo para su implementación.

En la reunión se reflexionará sobre los avances desde la histórica conferencia celebrada en Beijing en 1995 y destacará los logros, las mejores prácticas, las deficiencias y los retos presentes en la promoción de la igualdad de género en todo el mundo.

Fue el tema de la primera resolución de la Asamblea General en 1946, por la que se estableció la Comisión de Energía Atómica (disuelta en 1952), con el mandato de formular propuestas específicas para el control de la energía nuclear y la eliminación de las armas atómicas y todas las demás armas que pudieran adaptarse a la destrucción masiva. Esta reunión plenaria anual de alto nivel conmemora y difunde el Día Internacional para la Eliminación Total de las Armas Nucleares.
