Mining exports from the Huancavelica region add up to 81% of its exportable supply, it is urgent to develop added value in its shipments.

Peruvian News Agency PRENSAPERU.PE https://prensaperu.pe Twitter: @prensaperupe The great challenge of the Regional Government of Huancavelica (GORE Huancavelica) is to increase the export of products with added value, including trout, avocado, quinoa and potato chips, which have a high potential to continue expanding, said Edgar Vásquez Vela, director of the Global Business and Economy Research Center of the CIEN-ADEX Exporters Association.

It was during his presentation ‘Importance of inserting the experience of producers and exporters in tourist routes’, organized by the GORE on the occasion of the Huancavelica Tourism Week.

Between January and July 2021, total shipments in the region totaled US $ 40 million 191 thousand, reflecting a significant increase in demand of 73.8% compared to the same period in 2020 (US $ 23 million 125 thousand).

The supply is mainly minerals –between January and July they represented 81.6% of the total– and since, in 2022, it is almost a fact that prices are going to fall, the strategy should be to prop up non-traditional products and the relationship with farmers to reflect greater export dynamics, Vásquez said.

He pointed out that, in 2020, during the pandemic, the behavior of export activity was different from that of other regions, as it showed positive figures. Similarly, between January and May 2021 it presented a fairly positive trend, although in June it only grew 1% and in July it fell -56.9%, being the first month to close in the red.

It is likely to recover in the coming months – he pointed out – but there is already a latent possibility that it will present less dynamism, which is worrying, that is why it is important to promote the offer with added value.

“In recent years, Huancavelican shipments were unstable. They had times of important increases, but also very strong falls. In 2012 it achieved the record amount by adding shipments for US $ 212 million 700 thousand, mainly of minerals, “he said.

He projected that this 2021 exports would grow 70%, reaching US $ 70 million. “They are important figures because they are higher than those registered in 2020 and 2019, but still below the historical of 2012,” he said.

TOURISM
Vásquez considered that another important aspect for the region’s economy is tourism, an item whose global decline was -73% in 2020 and would decline -8% at the end of this year. Peru was the most affected in America as it fell by a similar magnitude last year (-73%).

In the case of Huancavelica, the contraction of receptive tourism in 2020 was -64%. 99.8% of tourists who come to the region are Peruvians, and of the total domestic tourism, 45.2% are made by their own residents, followed by Junín (23%), Ayacucho (5.6%) and Ica (5.4%). The percentage of foreign tourists for now is very unrepresentative, highlighted those from Chile and France.

For this reason, he recommended working on strategies in order to promote internal and intra-regional tourism, through joint coordination between the GORE, municipalities and the private sector, also betting on integrating macro-regional routes, prioritizing the attraction of internal tourism that comes from Ica. “Safe routes must be identified and communication campaigns designed to recover national and regional domestic tourism in the short term,” he stressed.
