Maricarmen Alva: Bicamerality means improving our democracy and laws, the National Agreement also supports this initiative, he maintained.

Peruvian News Agency PRENSAPERU.PE https://prensaperu.pe Twitter: @prensaperupe The president of Congress, Maricarmen Alva Prieto, today defended the constitutional reform proposal that proposes the restitution of the Senate and the Bicamerality in the Legislative Power.

“It is necessary to improve the quality of the laws, for democracy, it is time for us to return to the bicameral system after so long,” he said in Chiclayo in statements to journalists.

He pointed out that, during his recent meeting with representatives of the National Agreement, they agreed on the need to return to the bicameral system. He added that the majority of Peruvians, according to recent opinion polls, and specialists and constitutionalists call for constitutional reform for the return of the Chamber of Senators.

“In addition, we are underrepresented. We are 130 congressmen for a population of 33 million Peruvians”, said the head of Parliament.

At another point, Alva Prieto said that a unicameral Congress has not given the results that the population needs, so it is necessary for a more reflective chamber to review what the first chamber does.

He explained that there are seven bills that have been presented on this matter and it will be the Constitution and Regulations Commission that will prepare the corresponding opinion and decide on its viability or not.
