“Ser diferentes no debe ser un obstáculo para trabajar en unidad o tolerar la injusticia. Esta asamblea nos da la oportunidad de encarar de manera conjunta estas cuestiones, con la franqueza y la urgencia que la situación demanda. Estamos llamados a renovar los votos para lograr la igualdad de oportunidades para todos y la vigencia plena de los derechos humanos”, señaló.

Destacó el permanente compromiso del Perú con los valores y las instituciones del sistema interamericano, así como la confianza depositada por los miembros del referido organismo internacional.

“Con profunda emoción y convencido de que los trabajos de esta reunión conducirán a que los pueblos de las Américas podamos luchar juntos contra la desigualdad y la discriminación, declaro inaugurado este quincuagésimo segundo periodo ordinario de sesiones de la Asamblea General de la Organización de los Estados Americanos”, dijo el mandatario en la apertura de dicho evento.

Advirtió que tanto la desigualdad como la discriminación se han profundizado y extendido en el continente americano por las fallas e insuficiencias estructurales de nuestras sociedades y las dificultades económicas que se vieron agravadas por la pandemia de la COVID-19.

“La desigualdad y la discriminación constituyen una amenaza permanente y socava nuestro sentido de pertenencia común, genera desconfianza hacia la democracia como sistema político y erosionan la armonía y la paz que deben primar en nuestras sociedades”, remarcó.

Asimismo, enfatizó que el encarecimiento de la energía y los fertilizantes, junto a los efectos del cambio climático, han agravado las brechas que han hecho de nuestra región la más desigual del planeta.

En ese sentido, el presidente Castillo indicó que la lucha contra la desigualdad no debe pasar solo por reducir los niveles de pobreza ya que también es fundamental desarrollar políticas de redistribución. “Hay suficiente evidencia sobre los peligros que entraña la concentración de la riqueza, para la estabilidad y el desarrollo de nuestras sociedades y la democracia”.

Fue enfático al cuestionar que algunos agentes económicos estén obteniendo sobreganancias con los altos precios de los combustibles, lo cual está generando incertidumbre y un alto costo de vida en el Perú y otros países del mundo. En ese contexto, el jefe de Estado dijo que comparte plenamente el rechazo a esta situación tal cual lo han hecho, en semanas previas a la asamblea general, numerosos líderes mundiales.

“Lo mismo sucede con las sobreganancias que algunos agentes económicos vienen obteniendo por los altos precios de los combustibles, pescando a río revuelto sobre la incertidumbre y el encarecimiento de la vida. En las semanas previas a esta asamblea, numerosos líderes mundiales han hecho pronunciamientos al respecto, que deben ser atendidos y que compartimos plenamente”, puntualizó

“Inequality and discrimination constitute a permanent threat and undermine our sense of common belonging, generate mistrust towards democracy as a political system and erode the harmony and peace that should prevail in our societies,” he remarked.

He also emphasized that the rise in energy and fertilizer prices, together with the effects of climate change, have aggravated the gaps that have made our region the most unequal on the planet.

In this sense, President Castillo indicated that the fight against inequality should not only involve reducing poverty levels, since it is also essential to develop redistribution policies. “There is enough evidence about the dangers that the concentration of wealth entails, for the stability and development of our societies and democracy.”

He was emphatic in questioning that some economic agents are obtaining surplus profits from high fuel prices, which is generating uncertainty and a high cost of living in Peru and other countries in the world. In this context, the head of state said that he fully shares the rejection of this situation as numerous world leaders have done in the weeks prior to the general assembly.

“The same thing happens with the excess profits that some economic agents have been obtaining due to the high prices of fuels, fishing in a troubled river on the uncertainty and higher cost of living. In the weeks prior to this assembly, many world leaders have made statements in this regard, which must be heeded and which we fully share,” he said.
