“Esto no es una feria de vanidades. Este es un organismo político en el están representados los gobiernos”, dijo Guterres a Noticias ONU en una entrevista exclusiva.

“Lo que importa es que [los países] estén representados por alguien que pueda estar a la altura del momento actual”, apuntó, y añadió: “Así que no estoy tan preocupado por quién vendrá. Lo que me preocupa es asegurarme de que los países que estén aquí… estén listos para asumir los compromisos necesarios para hacer realidad los Objetivos de Desarrollo Sostenible, que lamentablemente no avanzan en la dirección correcta”.

Guterres enfatizó la necesidad de reformar el actual sistema financiero global “injusto, disfuncional y obsoleto”, para garantizar el logro de los ODS para 2030.

Recordó su propuesta de estímulo de 500.000 millones de dólares para los ODS con el fin de ayudar a las naciones en desarrollo a asegurarse de que tengan los recursos que necesitan para alcanzar la Agenda 2030.

ACCIÓN CLIMÁTICA
El titular de la ONU también señaló que la Cumbre sobre Ambición Climática de 2023 brindará una oportunidad para que los países, las empresas y la sociedad civil intensifiquen sus esfuerzos para frenar el avance galopante del cambio climático.

En una variante notable del formato habitual en el que los países están al frente y son los grandes protagonistas, esta Cumbre brindará una plataforma a los que el Secretario General denominó actores “de primera línea”, es decir, aquellos que están más comprometidos con la acción climática y pueden compartir las mejores prácticas.

“Avanzamos hacia un aumento de la temperatura global de entre 2,6 y 2,8 °C para finales de siglo”, advirtió, destacando la urgencia de volver al objetivo de limitar dicho aumento de temperatura a 1,5 °C por encima de los niveles preindustriales.

“Con voluntad política, aún es posible, pero queda mucho por hacer”, enfatizó Guterres.

IMPULSAR LA PAZ EN UCRANIA
En cuanto a la guerra en curso en Ucrania, el Secretario General reiteró que el objetivo central es asegurar la paz, y que ésta sea justa y conforme a la Carta de las Naciones Unidas y el derecho internacional.

Sin embargo, advirtió contra el optimismo excesivo, reconociendo que las condiciones actuales pueden no favorecer un “diálogo serio” para la paz.

“Creo que las partes están lejos de esa posibilidad en este momento, pero nunca, nunca dejaremos de esforzarnos para garantizar que la paz llegue a Ucrania”, subrayó.

FOCO EN LA SALUD PÚBLICA
Guterres también habló sobre las tres conversaciones ministeriales sin precedentes sobre salud pública mundial que se celebrarán la próxima semana: preparación para una pandemia, cobertura sanitaria universal y tuberculosis.

“La cobertura sanitaria universal es un objetivo esencial de la ONU”, enfatizó, y añadió que ésta “requiere no sólo que el sistema de las Naciones Unidas funcione, sino que los sistemas financieros sean mucho más justos de lo que son hoy”.

CLIMATE ACTION
The UN chief also noted that the 2023 Climate Ambition Summit will provide an opportunity for countries, businesses and civil society to step up their efforts to stop the rampant advance of climate change.

In a notable variant of the usual format in which countries are at the forefront and are the main protagonists, this Summit will provide a platform to what the Secretary General called “front-line” actors, that is, those who are most committed to the climate action and can share best practices.

“We are moving towards an increase in global temperature of between 2.6 and 2.8 °C by the end of the century,” he warned, highlighting the urgency of returning to the objective of limiting said temperature increase to 1.5 °C above preindustrial levels.

PROMOTE PEACE IN UKRAINE
Regarding the ongoing war in Ukraine, the Secretary General reiterated that the central objective is to ensure peace, and that it be fair and in accordance with the Charter of the United Nations and international law.

However, he warned against excessive optimism, acknowledging that current conditions may not favor “serious dialogue” for peace.

“I think the parties are far from that possibility at this point, but we will never, ever stop working to ensure that peace comes to Ukraine,” he stressed.

FOCUS ON PUBLIC HEALTH
Guterres also spoke about the three unprecedented ministerial talks on global public health taking place next week: pandemic preparedness, universal health coverage and tuberculosis.

“Universal health coverage is an essential goal of the UN,” he emphasized, adding that this “requires not only that the United Nations system works, but that financial systems are much fairer than they are today.”
