Campbell, recibió del Buró Federal de Investigaciones (FBI, sigla en inglés) dos pinturas al óleo que ahora serán retornadas al Arzobispado de Cusco.

Las obras de arte fueron presentadas por el subsecretario Campbell al viceministro de Relaciones Exteriores en el marco del Diálogo de Alto Nivel entre Perú y Estados Unidos, desarrollado en Washington D.C., que abre nuevos caminos de cooperación entre ambos países.

En la cita el vicecanciller Camino agradeció a su homólogo estadounidense por la restitución de dos cuadros de la época virreinal recuperados por el FBI.

La coordinación para la recuperación de estas valiosas piezas y su repatriación al Perú fue generada entre el Departamento de Estado, el FBI y la Embajada del Perú en Estados Unidos.

Las altas autoridades diplomáticas asistieron a la ceremonia de retorno de estos bienes culturales que fueron recuperados por el FBI en Nuevo México como resultado de una investigación en curso.

Las pinturas datan del siglo XVII y pertenecieron a la Parroquia Virgen del Carmen en Surimana, provincia de Canas, departamento del Cusco. La catalogación inicial de estos bienes culturales tuvo lugar el 2 de julio de 1984, con una verificación más reciente ocurrida el 6 de mayo del 2008.

Estas pinturas son reconocidas como el “Díptico San José, el Niño Jesús y San Cristóbal” quienes eran originalmente parte de una composición, pero que fueron posteriormente separados. Cada obra mide aproximadamente 35 pulgadas de altura, 29 pulgadas de ancho y 3 pulgadas de profundidad.

El vicecanciller Peter Camino reafirmó el compromiso del Perú en trabajar con Estados Unidos para combatir el tráfico ilegal de bienes culturas. También agradeció al FBI, el Departamento de Justicia y el Departamento de Estado de Estados Unidos por sus esfuerzos, que hicieron posible el retorno de estas valiosas pinturas a nuestro país.

The works of art were presented by Undersecretary Campbell to the Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs within the framework of the High Level Dialogue between Peru and the United States, held in Washington D.C., which opens new paths of cooperation between both countries.

At the meeting, Vice Chancellor Camino thanked his American counterpart for the restitution of two paintings from the viceregal era recovered by the FBI.

The coordination for the recovery of these valuable pieces and their repatriation to Peru was generated between the State Department, the FBI and the Peruvian Embassy in the United States.

High diplomatic authorities attended the ceremony for the return of these cultural assets that were recovered by the FBI in New Mexico as a result of an ongoing investigation.

The paintings date from the 17th century and belonged to the Virgen del Carmen Parish in Surimana, province of Canas, department of Cusco. The initial cataloging of these cultural assets took place on July 2, 1984, with a more recent verification occurring on May 6, 2008.

These paintings are recognized as the “Diptych of Saint Joseph, the Child Jesus and Saint Christopher” which were originally part of a composition, but were later separated. Each work measures approximately 35 inches tall, 29 inches wide and 3 inches deep.

Vice Chancellor Peter Camino reaffirmed Peru’s commitment to working with the United States to combat illegal trafficking of cultural property. He also thanked the FBI, the Department of Justice and the United States Department of State for their efforts, which made possible the return of these valuable paintings to our country.
