This announcement marks a historic and deeply moving event for Peru. It is the fourth time a Supreme Pontiff has visited our country: previously Saint John Paul II visited twice (1985 and 1988) and Francis in 2018. Yet this visit is unique and unlike all those before it: Leo XIV does not arrive as a distinguished visitor, but as a son returning home. He came to Peru more than 40 years ago as an Augustinian missionary, served in Chulucanas, was Bishop of Chiclayo and received Peruvian nationality; he knows our land, our joys and our wounds from within.
Peru is a nation where the Catholic faith has been the backbone of its identity, culture and social life for centuries; more than 75 % of its people identify as Catholic, and popular devotion reaches every corner of the territory, uniting coast, highlands and jungle. At a time when the country faces challenges such as insecurity, inequality and the urgent need for reconciliation, the Pope’s presence carries a renewed message: peace, justice, unity and the unwavering defence of human dignity.
Why these cities?
Lima: The capital and institutional and religious heart, the place of meeting with authorities and the faithful people.
Chiclayo: Where he exercised his pastoral ministry for decades; the reunion with those who knew him as “Father Robert”.
Cuzco: A symbol of millenary roots, the encounter with Andean faith and the country’s historical heritage.
Pucallpa: The gateway to the Amazon, the voice of indigenous peoples and a commitment to our common home and the most vulnerable.
The itinerary covers the three great natural regions of Peru, embracing its diversity and reaffirming that the Gospel reaches everyone, without distinction.
