La elección de nuestra capital para el siguiente encuentro de la cumbre representa una oportunidad para visibilizar los esfuerzos en materia de gestión hídrica, así como para fortalecer el posicionamiento del país como un actor proactivo en los foros internacionales sobre agua y desarrollo sostenible.
La representación peruana ante la FAO destacó, durante el evento, el compromiso del Perú con la implementación de la meta 6.4 de los Objetivos de Desarrollo Sostenible (ODS) 6, centrada en la eficiencia del uso del agua y la reducción del estrés hídrico.
Se mencionó la experiencia pionera del Perú, a través de su Autoridad Nacional del Agua, en la validación de indicadores internacionales y en el desarrollo de estudios piloto de desagregación del estrés hídrico por cuenca.
Asimismo, funcionarios de la FAO, la UNESCO y ONU-Agua compartieron avances en el monitoreo del mencionado objetivo, resaltando la necesidad de políticas basadas en evidencia y la consolidación de alianzas. En ese sentido, se presentó la Estrategia del Sistema de Naciones Unidas sobre agua y saneamiento, adoptada por la Asamblea General de la ONU en 2023, la cual articula la acción conjunta de agencias, fondos y programas.
Por su parte, el director general de la FAO, QU Dongyu, resaltó el rol esencial de AQUASTAT como herramienta de referencia global que ha permitido a los gobiernos y actores del desarrollo anticiparse a situaciones críticas sobre la gestión del agua.

Lima is preparing to host the largest international meeting of the water sector in the region, the “Latin America and Caribbean Water Summit.”

Lima was presented as the host of the next Latin America and Caribbean Water Summit, thanks to the co-sponsorship of the Peruvian government.
The selection of our capital for the next meeting of the summit represents an opportunity to highlight efforts in water management, as well as to strengthen the country’s position as a proactive player in international forums on water and sustainable development.
During the event, the Peruvian delegation to FAO highlighted Peru’s commitment to implementing target 6.4 of Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) 6, which focuses on water use efficiency and reducing water stress.
Peru’s pioneering experience, through its National Water Authority, in validating international indicators and developing pilot studies on disaggregating water stress by basin was mentioned.
Likewise, officials from FAO, UNESCO, and UN-Water shared progress in monitoring the aforementioned objective, highlighting the need for evidence-based policies and the consolidation of partnerships. In this regard, the United Nations System Strategy on Water and Sanitation, adopted by the UN General Assembly in 2023, was presented. This strategy articulates the joint action of agencies, funds, and programs.
For his part, FAO Director-General Qu Dongyu highlighted the essential role of AQUASTAT as a global reference tool that has allowed governments and development stakeholders to anticipate critical situations related to water management.
