El Papa León XIV presidió la Santa Misa de inicio de su ministerio petrino en una Plaza de San Pedro repleta de fieles y autoridades civiles y religiosas. Antes de la ceremonia, el Pontífice pasó en papamóvil, por primera vez, entre los miles de presentes, que también se aglomeraban a lo largo de la Via della Conciliazione, que da acceso a la plaza.

La solemne ceremonia comenzó dentro de la Basílica Vaticana, con una oración ante la tumba del Apóstol San Pedro, junto con los Patriarcas de las Iglesias Orientales. Desde allí, el Evangeliario, el Palio y el Anillo del Pescador fueron llevados en procesión hasta el altar en el atrio de la Plaza de San Pedro, mientras el coro entonaba la letanía de todos los santos.

Tras la proclamación del Evangelio, tres cardenales de los tres órdenes (diáconos, presbíteros y obispos) se acercaron a León XIV para la entrega de las insignias episcopales “petrinas”: el cardenal Mario Zenari le impuso el Palio y el cardenal Luis Antonio Tagle le entregó el Anillo del Pescador. La ceremonia continuó con el rito simbólico de la “obediencia”, rendido al Papa por doce representantes de todas las categorías del Pueblo de Dios, provenientes de varias partes del mundo, entre ellos, el cardenal brasileño Jaime Spengler. “FUI ELEGIDO SIN NINGÚN MÉRITO”
León XIV saludó a todos “con el corazón lleno de gratitud” y con una de las frases más célebres de San Agustín: “Nos hiciste, Señor, para ti, y nuestro corazón está inquieto hasta que descanse en ti” (Confesiones, 1, 1.1).

El Santo Padre recordó los últimos días, vividos de manera intensa con la muerte del Papa Francisco, “que nos dejó como ovejas sin pastor”. A la luz de la resurrección, enfrentamos este momento y el Colegio Cardenalicio se reunió en cónclave para elegir al nuevo sucesor de Pedro, “llamado a custodiar el rico patrimonio de la fe cristiana y, al mismo tiempo, afrontar las preguntas, inquietudes y desafíos de hoy”.

JAMÁS CEDER A LA TENTACIÓN DE SER UN LÍDER SOLITARIO O SUPERIOR A LOS DEMÁS
León XIV destacó las dos dimensiones de la misión que Jesús confió a Pedro: amor y unidad.

Jesús recibió del Padre la misión de “pescar” a la humanidad para salvarla de las aguas del mal y de la muerte. Esta misión permanece vigente hoy: lanzar siempre y nuevamente las redes y navegar por el mar de la vida para que todos puedan reencontrarse en el abrazo de Dios.

Esta tarea es posible porque Pedro experimentó en su propia vida el amor infinito e incondicional de Dios, incluso en la hora del fracaso y de la negación. A Pedro, por tanto, se le confía la tarea de “amar más” y dar su vida por el rebaño.

Para ello, Pedro y sus sucesores deben apacentar al rebaño sin ceder nunca a la tentación de ser un líder solitario o un jefe por encima de los demás, convirtiéndose en dominador de las personas que les han sido confiadas. Al contrario, deben servir la fe de los hermanos, caminando con ellos.

¡MIREN A CRISTO!
En nuestro tiempo, añadió el Santo Padre, todavía vemos demasiada discordia, heridas causadas por el odio, la violencia, los prejuicios, el miedo al diferente, por un paradigma económico que explota los recursos de la Tierra y margina a los más pobres.

Este es el espíritu misionero que debe animarnos, añadió el Papa León XIV, sin encerrarnos en nuestro pequeño grupo ni sentirnos superiores al mundo.

“Hermanos, hermanas, ¡esta es la hora del amor!”, concluyó el Pontífice, exhortando a construir una Iglesia misionera, que abre los brazos al mundo y anuncia la Palabra. “Juntos, como un solo pueblo, todos hermanos, caminemos al encuentro de Dios y amémonos los unos a los otros”.

LOOK TO CHRIST!
In our time, the Holy Father added, we still see too much discord, wounds caused by hatred, violence, prejudice, fear of those who are different, and by an economic paradigm that exploits the Earth’s resources and marginalizes the poorest.

This is the missionary spirit that should animate us, Pope Leo XIV added, without shutting ourselves away in our small group or feeling superior to the world.

“Brothers and sisters, this is the hour of love!” the Pontiff concluded, urging us to build a missionary Church that opens its arms to the world and proclaims the Word. “Together, as one people, all brothers and sisters, let us journey to encounter God and love one another.”
