El anuncio dado a la multitud por el Cardenal Protodiácono Dominique Mamberti, quien ha pronunciado la esperada fórmula latina, comunicando a Roma y al mundo el nombre del nuevo Sucesor de Pedro: “Eminentísimo y Reverendísimo Señor, Señor Robert Francis Cardenal de la Santa Romana Iglesia Prevost, quien ha tomado el nombre de León XIV”.
BIOGRAFÍA
León XIV, de nombre secular Robert Francis Prevost Martínez, nace en Chicago (EUA) un 14 de septiembre de 1955 y se nacionaliza peruano tras haber vivido más de 30 años en el Perú, es el 267.º “papa” de la Iglesia católica. Fue prefecto del Dicasterio para los Obispos y presidente de la Pontificia Comisión para América Latina desde enero de 2023 hasta abril de 2025.
Como sumo pontífice, es el jefe de Estado y noveno soberano de la Ciudad del Vaticano. Este 8 de mayo de 2025, fue elegido papa, convirtiéndose en el primero estadounidense y también el primero peruano, además del primero en poseer una doble nacionalidad. Es, asimismo, el segundo procedente de América tras su predecesor, Francisco.

Leo XIV, born Robert Francis Prevost Martínez, was born in Chicago (USA) on September 14, 1955, and became a Peruvian citizen after living in Peru for more than 30 years. He is the 267th pope of the Catholic Church. He served as Prefect of the Dicastery for Bishops and President of the Pontifical Commission for Latin America from January 2023 to April 2025.
As Supreme Pontiff, he is the head of state and ninth ruler of Vatican City. On May 8, 2025, he was elected pope, becoming the first American and also the first Peruvian, as well as the first to hold dual nationality. He is also the second from the Americas after his predecessor, Francis.
